Artscape Young Place: An Abstract Venue

Artscape Youngplace is a new age modern art gallery which doubles as a venue for events. It is located at the intersection of Argyle and Shaw placing this close to Queen Street West which has a very artistic community. This venue is like none other because of the abstract art surrounding the walls giving it a modernized feel. The contemporary feel is in style and is in high demand for its simplicity. This venue has multiple exhibits at once which gives variety to the client about what they like. Artscape features Canadian artists most of them being local.

This is the perfect place as a venue because of its versatility. It can be transformed from a formal venue to casual. It is most commonly used for presentations of any sort. Artscape can fit 100 people when it is set up theatre style. It is not an overwhelming space because it is open but not too much space. There also have on-site catering which is optional however, it is recommended.

This venue is often overlooked because it is an art gallery. However, this is a beautiful venue for events. They are geared towards making the experience of an event light and filled with artwork. If you are having an event you might want to consider having it at this venue because of its avant garde artwork.

A unique space for unique art, Graven Feather
Written by: Nicole Giroli

Established in 2011 and run by local artists Erin Candela and Pam Lobb, Graven Feather is an art space located in the heart of Queen West next to the Trinity Bellwoods Park. This place is for both artists and the art-loving public to display their art. Graven Feather includes workshops, retail, and gallery space. The Graven Feather is becoming Torontos networking hangout for artists in the community to share their work, and also learn from others.

Art
Graven Feather bases upon building a relationship with artists and the community. Graven Feather is not only a gallery space, but it also offers a venue to host events and community oriented events. Graven Feather’s studio is an open and accessible destination dedicated to fostering creative output and artistic exchange. They’ve displayed sketches of Dave Sheppard, the oil paintings of Kari Minchin, and of course the work of the gallery owners, and others. Graven Feather posts weekly, and monthly events, and artists coming to the gallery to display their art.

Workshops
Ask yourself when the last time was that you had a craft night. The Artist Residency Program is part of their initiative to widen the community and share artistic experiences. In addition to using Graven Feather as a studio to create your work, they invite you to participate in their studio/gallery/workshop space. Graven Feather has many workshops to offer, such as letterpress cards, linocut, framing and oil painting. You will gain the experience and learn something new.

Atmosphere
The Graven Feather is a unique space that can offer 300 square feet of bright, beautiful, and affordable exhibition space. It is also a bright and cheery environment. . This brightly lit and warm space is serves double-duty as a gallery and studio space. Given the small space, Graven Feather is spacious with it’s open concept, all-white minimal decor and bright lighting. This place is inviting and pleasant rather than your typical dark dungeon like art gallery.

Living in Canada, many take for granted how seamlessly our rights and freedoms have been woven into our constitution. For many people around the world the idea of having such a charter would be a luxury. However, The Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (FCMHR) have set out to help build a foundation to celebrate human rights worldwide. Thus, The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) has set out to achieve this very goal.

Being built in Winnipeg, Manitoba; upon its completion, it will be the national symbol for the cultivated paths that citizens and organizations have taken to ensure rights and freedoms for all. The CMHR will also serve as a reminder to constantly bring forth positive changes in order to eliminate intolerance, prejudice and injustice from existence.

On Oct 4th, Toronto did its part by holding “Always a Winnipegger & Friends Event”; a fundraiser for the CMHR, held at the Mayberry Fine Art Gallery. Several art lovers were present, along with those who simply wanted to make a difference. Many of the guests also happened to be Winnipeggers and ex-Winnipeggers. Among them were CMHR CEO Stuart Murray, National Campaign Chair, Gail Asper and M.P.P. Glen Murray. Alongside them, renowned Canadian singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk and Winnipegger artist, Rand Heidinger.

The evening brought sounds of clinking wine glasses, live music, tasty hors d’oeuvres and sights of lovely works of art. The event showcased pieces from famed Canadian artists, such as Charles Pachter, Rand Heidinger and Tara Sawchuk; whose works were all up for bidding during the event’s silent auction. Pachters prints of impulsively juxtaposed iconic Canadian symbols and Sawchuk’s modern yet classic stained glass piece captivated the eyes of all guests.

Cheers and laughter filled the gallery however a moment was given to special guests, to take to the mic and share their emotional personal stories. Some talked of poverty while others on gaining basic human rights. Nevertheless, their anecdotes all shared the idea of Canada as a strong example for rights and freedoms on a global scale.

The night although eventful, felt short-lived and guests did not want to leave. But after celebrating humanity’s triumphs and progression many knew upon leaving, that the future did not seem brighter but is brighter.
