The Omni King Edward Hotel welcomed more than 100 guests to enjoy delicious foods and fantastic entertainment while leading up to the main event of unveiling the timeless beauty that is the Crystal Ballroom, fully restored and as pristine and elegant as ever. The Omni team is excited about the new space and is already booked for a number of weddings over the next few months.

Our Deb Lewis from CityEvents was lucky enough to see the ballroom a few times over the last decade at Doors Open Toronto. The first time over a decade ago, when the room was full of cobwebs and was only used by a local fly fishing club. After that the ballroom was deemed unsafe so it was years later after the renovation started she was able to see the ballroom starting to take shape. “It is such an exciting time to see the King Eddy ballroom rebirth for another century of key events.”

Named after their adorned crystal chandeliers, the Crystal Ballroom also kept its old-world charm meets modern luxury with ornate moldings, 8-metre high coffered ceilings and floor to ceiling windows with panoramic views of the city. These features are what makes the Crystal Ballroom the most popular venue for hosting grand society affairs, royal galas, debutante balls, weddings and conventions.

In fact, since opening in 1922, the venue, located on the hotel’s 17th floor has hosted some of Toronto’s most prestigious and extravagant events from the 1920s to the 1970s including:

August 8, 1927 - The Prince of Wales (later, the uncrowned King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor) and British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin were entertained with a lavish state dinner.

1939 – Senator Frank O’Connor founder of Laura Secord Candy in Canada, received a remarkable testimonial dinner, which had a crowd overflow the hall and the head table was filled with the chief representatives of the king, the government and the city including Mayor Ralph C. Day

April 12, 1955 - Polio Vaccine proved effective and safe for 80% to 90% of children across Canada and the US. Nearly 700 doctors, technicians and nurses crowded the Crystal Ballroom to watch the news report on two dozen TV Sets, installed specifically for the occasion.

And it seems that the hotel has some very strong intentions to keep doing so, especially with the new restoration that has brought new life and shine to the ballroom.

Canada’s largest Andy Warhol exhibit has opened in Toronto

Andy Warhol Revisited opened in Toronto on July 1 and is the largest Andy Warhol exhibit to ever come to Canada. This is exhibit provides an engaging and educational walkthrough of Andy Warhol’s development as an artist and his effect on culture which is still evident today. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity so we decided to go and check it out!

The exhibit is not located in a traditional gallery space; 77 Bloor St. West is actually an old Guess store. When Rivlin was making plans to bring the exhibit to Toronto, he knew that Yorkville was where he wanted it to be. “It’s where fashion and finance intersect — at Bay and Bloor. (Warhol) was all about high society and money, but also fashion and pop culture,” says Rivlin.

The exhibit showcases over 120 Warhol prints and paintings. You can find his more famous pieces such as the Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe, but it was nice to see lesser-known pieces as well. It seems like Ron Rivlin really understands who Andy Warhol was and is ably to perfectly capture Warhol’s personality with this multi-level exhibit. Upon entering, I choose to do an audio tour of the exhibit to learn more about the history of Andy Warhol and his pieces. I highly recommend this as it also gives great insight into his life and provides more details of his art.

Revolver Gallery is a Los Angeles based gallery showcasing and selling the largest collection of original Andy Warhol pieces. Revolver Gallery was founded in 2012 by Ron Rivlin, a Toronto native who always had a passion for Andy Warhol and his art. Rivlin purchased his first Warhol piece three years ago and has since grown his collection to over 100 pieces. The gallery is mainly comprised of Rivlin’s own pieces.

If you haven’t been yet, don’t worry because Andy Warhol Revised is open until December 31. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for youth and students and children under the age of five are free! It’s conveniently located and so cheap so there’s no excuse to miss it.

Address: 77 Bloor St. West

Time: Tuesday- Sunday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., closed Monday.

Price: $10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 for youth and students and free for children under 5

Their name comes from one of the most celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century: Glenn Gould. Their first mission is to honour the legacy he left behind by supporting the arts and to continue to operate as a Centre of Excellence for Canadian and international performances.

Glenn Gould Studio is also a superb recording facility which offers sound isolation, state-of-the-art recording facilities and acoustics that are ideal for classical and jazz recordings. The place is modern and glamorous with the red carpet and the cordons at the entrance. You will feel like a celebrity!

In addition, they are the home to many business functions for local and internationally-based companies, offering an environment ideal for meetings, product launches and seminars.

Indeed, the stage welcomed many concerts and CD recordings by very famous singers such as Shania Twain, Blue Rodeo, The Trews, Mariah Carey, Matt Dusk, Gordon Lightfoot, Natalie McMaster and Feist. And for those who have seen Life of Pi, The Right Kind of Wrong, Our Man in Tehran, Being Julia, One Week and Glitter; these film scores were all recorded here.

This place is ideal for all your events thanks to the unique style of the place, offering a glamorous image combine to a design and modern atmosphere, which will charmed your guests for sure! One thing that impressed us also was all of the in house technical equipment. Having everything in the studio saves from renting all of the expensive AV equipment and paying for labour to set it up. With the new look and feel of the location and in-house equipment the space is ideal for many events especially if a performance is involved.
