Canadian Helen Keller Centre honours ROM at award luncheon

The Canadian Helen Keller Centre (CHKC) Award was launched in 2005 to recognize individuals and organizations for their notable contributions to the deaf-blind community in Canada. The event is hosted by–and is a project of–the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP).

The deaf-blind community is a unique community of individuals with this dual disability. CFPDP aims to help change the way Canadians think about physical disabilities. For this, the CHKC and awards were launched. CHKC is Canada’s first training facility dedicated solely to deaf-blind persons. Programs include necessary everyday skills such as home organization, grooming, personal finance, computer skills, communication skills like sign-language and braille and many more.

On Friday, April 27, the 14th annual luncheon will be held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. This year, CHKC will honour the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The award will be accepted by Josh Basseches, Director & CEO, ROM and the guest speaker will be Josh Saunders.

The Great Valentine Gala is one of many initiatives the Foundation puts on in order to celebrate, recognize and provide awareness to physically challenged Canadians from across the country. The Gala could not have been done without the help of philanthropist and CFPDP founder, Honourable Vim Kochhar.

This year, the Gala hosted 425 guests at the Fairmont Royal York, where everyone mingled and enjoyed wine, an awards presentation, and a fantastic meal. The reception followed with a live performance from the Jim Cuddy Band and ended the night with some dancing with the help of DJ, Jerry Archer.

Guests were able to purchase Tombola balloons for $60 and redeem prizes throughout the evening. The CFPDP has raised over $30 million over the last few years, all thanks to the success of the Great Valentine Gala!

This year CityEvents was honoured to be a part of the planning of the AMICA Helping Hands event which took place on November 2nd, 2017 at the Omni King Edward Hotel. Attendees of the event were happily seated in the beautiful crystal ballroom and looked forward to fundraising for such a beautiful cause.Amica

The night was dedicated to raising awareness of seniors living in poverty in Canada and also provided insight and knowledge on not only the physical but mental difficulties Canadians face as they grow older, some without families to help and support them.

Guests were delighted with delicious food and great entertainment including a keynote speech delivered by Susan Pinker and a hilarious comedy skit by the talented, Jessica Holmes. There was also a blue carpet to showcase all guests’ dashing good looks.

Paintings created by AMICA’s very own residents were scattered throughout the entire venue as a part of an extra effort to show support and showcase the talent of AMICA residents.. Guests were able to participate in silent auctions throughout the night to purchase these paintings as well.

This year as always, AMICA Helping Hands was a success and thanks to the generous and kind Canadians who took part in the night’s festivities, AMICA was once again able to raise funds to help support seniors across Canada.

The Canadian Disability Hall of Fame was an amazing event! It took place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel on October 18th. People started to come in at 11:30 AM to the reception, but at 12 PM is when it all started. Joanne Smith came in and introduced herself to everybody, starting lunch so that we could celebrate the winners.

After lunch, Joanne came to the stage again, but this time prepared to celebrate with the winners of the awards! She called every one of them, Todd Nicholson, Jim Sanders, Shirley Shelby, and Robert Snoek to the stage to receive their awards. All of them had something impactful to say, after receiving their awards, thanking people that helped them through the hard times and good times. Everybody left the hotel in great joy after beautiful speeches made from the winners and others. Click here for more pictures.
