A congratulations is in order as our very own Deborah Lewis has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Toronto Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (THCC)! Deb was appointed on Thursday, May 26 of this year at the AGM. The focus of the THCC is to support economic development for Hispanic Business and help their members facilitate business opportunities in Toronto, Canada and Latin America.

Deb is interested in the continuous cultural growth of the city and is excited to actively help the THCC involvement in the community. Over the years, CityEvents has worked on various cultural events across the GTA. In March, Deborah organized an event for ANOKHI MEDIA. The event was established in 2007 to celebrate the regional, national and international success story of the dynamic South Asian community, and has since become an annual calendar highlight amongst its consumers, clients, participating talent, celebrities, and the media.

Being in the event planning industry, Deb knows the importance of networking. She is a big believer in using local chambers of commerce as a business networking tool. Deb also has a passion for entrepreneurship. One of her main clients is an accounting firm called Hogg, Shain & Scheck. The firm works primarily with entrepreneurs to provide them with personalized services to help grow their business and achieve their financial goals. One specific thing Deb really appreciates about the THCC (among countless others) is how they take time to recognize entrepreneurs and business owners in Toronto.

Deb’s professional and creative approach as well as her association management experience makes her a leader in her field and an asset to the Board of Directors at the THCC. We are all very excited for Deb and know she will do a great job in her new role!

outdoor movie

Are all of you film-lovers ready ? This season’s outdoor movies in Toronto has started!

Well, when I say “about to start”, I mean not right now ! Although last year’s films were announced pretty early on, this year’s organizers seem to want to wait a little more and keep us in the dark. After a tiring search on the Internet (on the plus side, with a hot chocolate because of the weather), I could only find two organizations that are willing to share their schedule for the months to come.

We have that going for us, which is nice!

Christie Pits Film Festival starts on the 5th of July at sundown for his opening night with a title quite promising : “A Toronto Symphony of Horror”.

Three films will be shown to a terrified public (or not, we’ll see). First up is Nosferatu, directed by F. W. Murnau. What’s special about this projection, it will be featured by a live-score performance and original composition by Del Bel. What a treat!

The other two films of the night will be : Wakening, directed by Danis Goulet and Silent Garden, directed by Dylan Reibling. I can tell you this night is going to be legendary!

Stay tuned!

Hi Everyone! I am back with more dates for this summer’s outdoor movie frenzie! This time, it is Open Roof Festival’s turn to announce all the films that will be scheduled for their 6th season. And I can tell you that the selection is quite interesting!

Let’s begin with the first film that will be shown on opening night, which will be the incredible Kurt Cobain : Montage of Heck on June 17. This chef-d’oeuvre will set the mood for the upcoming movies of this summer! But before each film, a band will come up on stage and perform their original songs just for you! Isn’t that wonderful news?

Screen shot 2015-06-09 at 10.12.09 AM

On Wednesday morning we coordinated an event with Hogg, Shain & Scheck and helped them organize and promote their Managing for Growth Seminar. The guest speakers for the day were CEO John Wilson from CEO Global Network and Phil Kirby, CEO and founder of Organization Thoughtware International Inc. The seminar was very informative and we enjoyed being a part of it. Our first speaker for the day was John Wilson who spoke about how great CEOs are made. He has coached a number of top-earning CEOs and has learned some valuable information in the process which he shared with the guests. Among the advice he gave, what stuck with us is when he discussed the importance of networking and being connected. I know in any industry (not only event planning) in order to have a successful business, you need to be able to maintain relationships with people you meet. John Wilson has actually written a book on this subject called Great CEOs and How They Are Made. The book has been highly acclaimed and is definitely worth checking out, attendees of the seminar all received a copy.

Phil Kirby was our “headliner” and he did not disappoint. His talk kept the audience engaged and the material was useful to people in all industries. He helped put a spotlight on the relationships between processes and how to solve production issues at the source by being on sight and being able to see the process for yourself.

Screen shot 2015-06-09 at 10.13.11 AMThe event was held at the Delta Toronto East in Scarborough, only a few minutes away from Hogg, Shain & Scheck. The hotel was much larger than I had initially anticipated. Delta provided a very hospitable environment and provided a full breakfast that included a number of different pastries, yogurt and LOTS of coffee (very important).

Screen shot 2015-06-09 at 10.15.56 AMOverall, the event was a success and everything went off without a hitch. Thank you again to the sponsors Ted Rogers School of Management and CEO Global Network. Also we would like to give a special thank you to our speakers John Wilson and Phil Kirby. Stay tuned because Hogg, Shain & Scheck have more really interesting events coming up so make sure you visit their website for more details. On October 27th, Brian Beaulieau will be back for his annual economic update.
