The King of Design Weekends: The King East Design District Exhibition

King St East, Toronto, design district, logo

The first annual King East Design District Exhibition was a masterpiece event! Thanks to all our supporters and participants. Hundreds of passports were sold, and over $2500 was raised for Habitat for Humanity Toronto. KEDD set out to inspire decorators and designers, and do-it-your-selfers, and bring communities together by mutually supporting a great cause. With everyone’s help we were able to reach and surpass these goals.

The weekend of creativity was full of laughter, good eats, and great works of interior art.  KEDD visitors had the chance to venture on “Designer Strolls”, take part in design consultations, view the finest Italian furniture and even get a history lesson by seeing Moroso’s “Behind, After or Beyond” travelling exhibit.  KEDDers also had the opportunity to join the Andrew Richards Design Team to learn how to give their backyards a make-over. And if all that didn’t get your design muses singing then learning how to toss a pizza at Mangi & Bevi, eating delicious treats with Mari Loewen from ANNA Magazine and chatting with celebrity designer Ramsin Khachi at Cambria sure did the trick.

KEDD guests showed much enthusiasm and appreciation for the King East Design District. Several visitors had their KEDD passports in hand and design questions in mind. Many were eager to find out how they could transform their small spaces while others simply wanted a change from traditional spaces to modern designs. Nonetheless, all had one thing in common; they needed inspiration.

The exhibition allowed for individuals to take the opportunity to drop by and enjoy the city’s design district. The event called for those who wanted to take time out of their busy lives and really seize an afternoon for a simple glass of wine, a few nibbles and a scenic endeavour.  Journalist, Rob Campbell even wrote an article about the exhibit in Digital Journal titled, King St East now recognized as Design District of Toronto. Along with Campbell there were many other  industry professionals present who felt the exhibition invigorated the design community making the event worthwhile and something to be repeated for years to come.

So whether you live in a lavish downtown condo, or you’re still dwelling in your mother’s basement, we hope the weekend enlightened those who needed refreshing ideas and gave a little nudge to those hesitating with a design dare. Toronto has a lot to offer and the King East Design District is definitely a must-see destination to fill up on your creative juices.

We hope everyone enjoyed their journey through the district and picked up innovative ideas along the way. We’ll be back next year with more design good times!

Toronto is officially embracing autumn and is soon to be finding itself covered in        a blanket of colourful leaves and the season’s brisk breezes.  However, it’s not just Mother Nature bringing in the scenic surroundings; the end of September will also mark the celebration of the city’s arts and culture. Starting with Culture Days; this third annual Canada-wide event will be paying tribute to the creative innovation of all mediums of art from dance and music to visual arts and theatre. Launched in 2010 by a National Steering Committee and volunteer Provincial Task Forces; it is a collaborative national volunteer movement, committed to shedding light onto local artists and cultural organizations while providing them with opportunities to be widely recognized. The event takes place Friday Sept 28th all the way to Sunday Sept 30th and includes various activities for all ages.

In Toronto, Sun Life Cinema will be screening a collection of three short films from leading Asian filmmakers while Ontario College of Art and Design will be hosting ‘Night Kitchen’; an all-night event featuring performances and projects showcasing the hierarchal structure and identities of art and educational institutions.

And while Culture Days is set to ignite the artful weekend, Nuit Blanche will be lighting up the night through its arts and festivities. This is the seventh year of the Parisian inspired, mass accessible contemporary art event. Also known as the ‘Sleepless Night’, this twelve hour extravaganza will feature over 140 art projects and exhibits displayed across the city on the night of Sept 29th to the morning of Sept 30th. Nuit Blanche’s main focus is to engage and inspire the public on the impact of art on society and vice versa. The high-event exhibit will bring awareness to the boundless world of art and how it can be utilized to transform the most unlikeliest spaces to wonderful places. The streets are not the only domain for Nuit Blanche, several museums, art institutions and galleries will have their doors open and presenting the public with their artistic experience.

September 29th also invites the public to Art of Fashion; a leading Canadian organization dedicated to shining the
spotlight onto emerging fashion and accessories designers. This years’ AOF design competition will showcase works by designers representing the 2012 theme of ‘Raw’. Participants will have a chance to view all the designs featured and see who comes out winning as a panel of industry judges casts their vote for The Most Promising Designer 2012 and Best Exhibit.

Last but not least, the King East Design District will also be taking place on this art concentrated weekend. Event goers will have the opportunity to visit participating retailers and experience their design and interactive experiences. Along with the purchasing of a passport, participants will not only have a chance to win amazing prizes from participating retailers but will be helping Habitat for Humanity Toronto. So whether you’re into cultural events, contemporary art, fashion or modern design, the season will definitely reacquaint you with your artistic side and remind you that Fall brings the weekend of creativity.

Art of Fashion 2012

September 14, 2012 by

When it comes to art and fashion, places such as Paris, Milan and New York City are what tend to come to mind. However, a non-profit organization is setting the record straight by bringing forth how fashionable the Great White North really is. We are not all about our toques and parkas, despite how symbolic we have made them. Art of Fashion is the only Canadian organization devoted to emerging designers to help showcase their talent and provide opportunities to further careers in fashion.

Art of Fashion, launched in 1998 by CMP and President of Paradigm Events, Michelle  Planche; AOF has cemented their vision in seaming together individuals with the passion for fashion and business development. Art of Fashion has since seen a stream of success from over 20,000 attendees to an annual Design Competition highlighting the best in fresh emerging talents, all the while benefitting charities such as Sunshine Dreams for Kids, Rethink Breast Cancer and A Child’s Voice Foundation.

This year’s Design Competition features the theme of Raw. What does that mean? In essence, it is the fundamental flesh of fashion. Moreover, guests will have the chance to see it all be embodied once the top ten finalists present their interpretation of what Raw is to Fashion. There will be a panel of industry judges casting their final vote on The Most Promising Designer 2012 and Best Exhibit.

The competition will take place on one of the most artistic nights in the city; Saturday Sept 29th, during Nuit Blanche and right after The King East Design District first day. The city will be oozing with creativity, from art you can bring home to art you can wear. And speaking of art you can wear…Like AOF on Facebook for a chance to win an Yves Saint Laurent bag. And as the famous designer once said “Fashions fade, style is eternal”. So come out and enjoy a night lit by everlasting style.
