Dundas West Fest

The inaugural edition of the Dundas West Fest took place on the 8th of June 2013!

In collaboration with the Dundas West BIA & the Little Portugal BIA. The Dundas West Fest aimed to unite businesses, residents and the many communities that together make up the neighbourhood.

Where: Dundas Street West from the Old Village of Brockton to Little Portugal

The 12 city blocks fest  featured: 3 entertainment stages, 6 busker zones, over 40 Licensed patios, Children’s activities, great food, live music and fabulous shopping.(Over 200 Unique Vendors).

Dundas West Fest was a premiere destination for music lovers. From hot world music to hip independent sounds. Music lovers found what they sought. Musicians of all types were playing live at many of the bars.fabulous shopping.(Over 200 Unique Vendors).The list of food places on Dundas was incredible. From locations such as Enoteca Sociale, Quinta, Wallflower, Bivy, The Lakeview, The Guild, Brockton General, and The Grove.2 Kids’ Zones within its perimeter, filled with fun activities for kids and families.Hope you enjoyed a full day of arts, music, kids’ activities, food, drink and shopping!

Walk for Change

On Saturday, May 11^th LAMP Community Health Centre’s Walk for Change 5K Walkathon supported the 1 in 5 Canadians living with mental illness in your community.   The walk helped reduce the stigma of mental illness, and raised funds to benefit local mental health support programs, such as LAMP’s own Among Friends. This program provides social and recreation opportunities to individuals facing mental health challenges and helps them work toward recovery while promoting health, community, and respect.

The event began at LAMP Community Health Centre near Islington Ave & Lakeshore Blvd West, with Registration at 9am and the walk at 10am. Members of the community walked 5km through the Etobicoke-Lakeshore area, stopping first at the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital buildings, and continuing passed the Mastercard Centre on Kipling, towards the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery on Evans.  Along the way, speakers brought the history to life while discussing the importance of community mental health services to those of us affected by mental illness.  All members of the public were welcome.

Canadian Helen Keller Centre 2013 Award Luncheon

This year the Canadian Helen Keller Centre Award Luncheon took place April 25^th, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. For this 9^th annual award ceremony, CHKC, in conjunction with the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons (CFPDP), honoured the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) for its outstanding achievements and contributions to the disability of deaf-blindness, and raising much needed funds to operate the centre.

Mr Larry Corke (Awards Chair, CHKC) and Cindy Accardi (Executive Director, Rotary Cheschire Homes and CHKC) presented the 2013 Canadian Helen Keller Award to John Rafferty CEO & President of CNIB and this included a special plaque made in Braille…do you know how hard it was to find a supplier who does awards in Braille?

The award was a great opportunity to network and mingle as 250 guests came to honour the award recipients and to listen to the wise words of Premiere of Ontario Kathleen Wynne and the audience enjoyed her update on the provinces involvement in this community.

The luncheon was paced by awarding London Olympic Paralympics athletes Patrick Anderson (wheelchair Basketball), David Durepos (Wheelchair Basketball), Jared Funk (Wheelchair Rugby), Virginia McLachla (Athletics), Nathan Stein (Swimming) and Michelle Stilwell (Wheelchair Race) with the King Clancy Award.

For this occasion the national anthem was wonderfully sung by Major Beverly Ivany.

Master of Ceremony Rob Snoek was our host for the day as a former Paralympics world champion and president of the CFPDP.

Bloke & Fourth

Bloke & 4^th is this incredible unique venue on King West & Spadina in the heart of the entertainment district that has 2 different atmospheres in one place.  There is a great seating area as well as mingling area.

First there is the East wing called Bloke. A stylish lounge where designs meets comfort and urban atmosphere. Everything is in place for people to relax, connect and enjoy cocktails up until 11pm.

Then, the West wing, 4^th, is a restaurant featuring globally inspired menu, focusing on local and seasonal ingredients, which enable them to created and update it 4 times a year.
