UnExpected ’13 VIP Opening Night Party

This year’s opening night party for the Canadian Special Events Expo was both ‘UnExpected’, and unforgettable; with a scrumptious variety of food, memorable entertainment, and ample networking opportunities, this event was a huge success. Approximately 700 event industry professionals from across Canada came out to UpCountry in the heart of Toronto, to mix and mingle at UnExpected ’13 on March 20th.
From delicacies provided by Presidential Gourmet, Cheeseworks, Parts and Labour & Neptuno, beverages from Griffin Gastropub & Wandering Bean Coffee, and desserts by Bucket and Whisk, to performances from Sarah Violin, Jordan Clark, EH440, and Becky Hoops & David Fiset; UnExpected ’13 had something for everybody’s tastes. The event also featured ‘unexpected’ elements such as a sidewalk chalk drawing by Toronto’s own Chalkmaster Dave, an Easter bunny distributing Cadbury eggs & goodies out front, a puzzle by Master Pieces, and captivating projections from Apex Sound.
The CityEvents team sponsored the social media management for this event, and were on-site to execute several contests, interact with guests, and encourage online engagement. We hosted online contests leading up to the event in which we gave away passes to both the UnExpected party, and the Canadian Special Events Expo: Tradeshow. Our on-site contests were based on guests’ involvement with social media including activity on Crowd Activation’s Social Mosa, a combination Twitter & Instagram wall, and the event’s mobile app from The App Labb. Winners went away with a Bucket & Whisk gift basket, a fondue set or gift card from CHEESEWERKS, a Parts & Labour gift card, or tickets to Sensation: Ocean of White from Nasco Staffing and the Rogers Centre.
We at CityEvents had an amazing time at this year’s UnExpected opening night party, and we are already looking forward to the next one!

Premiere Event Venue The Carlu Celebrates its 10th Anniversary

After the re opening of the Carlu in May 2003. This historical landmark is a one of a kind architectural masterpiece at Yonge and College Street. Back in the day, in the 1930’s, it was the estate of Lady Eaton, Toronto department store president and heir Sir John Craig Eaton’s wife. Even then it was the venue of sumptuous soirées in the sophisticated spaces designed by French architect Jacques Carlu.
Years later, Mark Robert and Jeffry Roick, took a leap of faith on renovating the building for it to become the historic Art Moderne venue that it is now. The Carlu, named after its architect, is at this time referred to as “the highest profile restoration in
Canada” and designated a National Historic Site in 1982. The Herittage Award for Best restored place by the Canadian Event Perspective Magazine is one of the many awards won by this venue. Along goes the Architectural Excellence Award in 2004 by Ontario Architectural Association and 2012 Canada’s Top Venue by Meeting + Incentive Travel Magazine and many more.
Mark Robert refers to it as “more of a museum that houses special events”
On May 1st, 2003, Robert and Roick opened the seventh floor to the public once again. They renamed the venue for the famous architect and his wife whose delightful painted murals of pastoral life were unearthed beneath 27 years of neglect.
About the Carlu :
In a nutshell this is over 500,000 guests, over 1650 events (from weddings, charity, awards, concerts, Fashion shows to corporate meetings and social events.
But it is also featured with these sumptuous spacessuch as:
-The Auditorium: It is 8,500 square feet in total with capacity for 1,200 theatre-style seats (460 fixed in the Balcony, 740 removable on the lower level) and a 1,200 square foot stage.
– The Round Room : Dining for up to 300 guests, or 240 with a dance floor; capacity for stand-up receptions for up to 450 people. An original Art Moderne design and décor, including domed ceiling, Art Moderne murals and central Lalique fountain.
– The Grand Foyer: It is 10,000 square feet total, allowing for 700 people for dinner or more than 1,500 guests for cocktail-
style receptions. With eight rigging points in the ceiling used for trussing, draping, hanging, etc. And marble and monel metal embellished elevators. Also the main artery runs entire length of seventh floor, acting as gathering area for all useable spaces or solo for multi-purpose functions or ceremonies.
– The Clipper Room(Private Dining rooms): Smaller in scale, with two adjoining rooms at 650 and 300 square feet each (seated
dinner capacity for 50) with expansive exterior windows. Graced with floor-to-ceiling mirrored doors and Art Moderne-inspired furniture design and fixtures. Ideal for conferences, breakout rooms, individual meeting rooms, intimate dinners or as a Bridal Room
-The Sky Room: Capacity for 300 for cocktail receptions or 210 for seated dinners (150 seated with dance floor) , may be used as cocktail area prior to Round Room dinner event or separately for ceremonies and/or luncheon events. Two large skylights and north facing windows; simple and clean décor
As you can see, “The Carlu has lots up its sleeve for the future”…

Trade Show at the Canadian Special Events EXPO13

Thursday, March 21st, The Canadian Special
Event Expo 2013, hosted a Trade show at the Metro Toronto
Convention Centre.
As a social media sponsor of the UnExpected13 opening night party the night before,
we were welcome to attend this one of a kind event.
What is a Trade show all about you would ask?

Well actually, it is about representing the entire event industry in one place, to provide professionals and attendees access to an eclectic network. This included entertainment previews, and opportunities to meet a number of event suppliers.
There were a number of stalls with innovative products and services, new technologies, such as a fog wall that you can use to screen videos, or entertainment with lookalikes such as Michael Jackson and Marilyn Monroe.

Also the fun part was in my opinion the numerous photo booths at the show. Everything that you ever imagine to take pictures was available. From 3D printed photos, to a fully automated
booth and for some photo interaction sometimes even props were available to jazz up the photos.
What about the food some of you might add?
Glutton would not have been disappointed! There were food stations to please everyone. Whereas it was sweet with Cupcakes Companies who are able to put your company’s logo on the frosting, or corporate maple sugar gifts.
Everything was set up for business interactions or even just for guests to look for new and creative ideas for future events. “See what’s new and hot now” in an industry that keeps on growing.
Inspiration was floating around us the entire day.
