On June 10th started the world’s first Canada Philippine Fashion Week in Toronto. This 6 day event celebrated Philippe Independence Day in style and Kol Hope foundation for Children was serving as the beneficiary of the inaugural launch.
This week was proudly sponsored by PLDT, Philippine’s largest telecommunications company, GMA International, Scotiabank, San Miguel, Philippine Airlines, Lexus Downtown, Shangri-La Toronto, Kevin Murphy and Max’s of Manila.
PLDT Canada Philippine Fashion week had a lot to offer. From an opening night party hosted by Lexus Downtown, to a fashion exhibit at The Thompson Hotel or a dinner of couture cuisine and cocktails, CPFW had something for everyone’s tastes. At the big fashion show at Roy Thomson Hall many local celebrities like Steven & Chris were in attendance and local fashion designers presented their collections which were later showcased at the new GotStyle in the Distillery.
Canada Philippine Fashion Week is a non-profit organization aimed at showcasing fashion, culture, creativity and artistry of Filipinos in Canada and the Philippines. With over 800,000 Filipinos in Canada alone, it also aims to enhance public awareness, image, and the rise of Filipino fashion on the world stage, and to open up the fashion trade between both countries.

Canadian born Melissa Nepton hit Toronto Fashion week with a bang, with her ready-to-wear couture for chic, urban, career women. The collection reflected both personality and style; she aims at showcasing both femininity and expression.
That is why when I got the chance to see her show I was pleasantly surprised. Surprised to see a new designer, and to find so many things that I would wear everyday. This show was even more memorable to me because it was my first time being able to sit front row at the Toronto Fashion week, which was an honour.
Her chic stylish looks included pieces like high collars, oversized sweaters, and loose and feminine blouses in neutrals, creams, and shades of grey and black. For a country like Canada, it can be difficult to look good in warm sweaters. Melissa successfully created a number of stylish pieces for a couture fall/winter look. I will be sure to look for any retailers who carry her collection next fall when outfitting myself for the winter season.

“Aint nobody dope as me, I’m just so fresh and so clean!” Atlanta hip-hop artists Outkast played as the seats filled with eager fashionistas ready to see the new Joe Fresh collection. The Joe Fresh popularity seems to grow each year, and Joe Mimran’s line did not disappoint. Using the 1966 movie Blow-Up as his inspiration, his line instilled a sexy, sixties-couture vibe, serving up more than just a smile and apple pie. Pieces from this season featured graphic white and black patterns, knee-high patent boots and boxy structured handbags.
